Physical inactivity is a primary contributor to many chronic diseases including chronic low back pain, which in turn can result in reduced quality of life and increased risk for disability. The chronic low back pain study evaluated outcomes associated with the use of a Fitbit monitor and motivational interviewing in individuals with chronic low back pain. The Fitbit is a widely used consumer activity monitor that provides a way to self-monitor physical activity. It can also be used to facilitate goal setting for increasing physical activity. Participants in this study completed a 3-month trial to see how the use of a Fitbit and/or Motivational Interviewing techniques could help them to meet physical activity guidelines of 150 moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week and if it could impact their low back pain.
