Walk with Ease in the Community
The ISU Wellness Works program was established as a worksite wellness outreach program in the Department of Kinesiology. A parallel outreach program called Community Connections for Public Health (www.ccph.iastate.edu) is designed to support community level programming in collaboration with county health leaders. The programming is linked to a community health course (HS 430). Communities have increasingly asked for help in promoting physical activity as this is a key priority in the Healthy Iowan's plan as well as in the national Active People Healthy Nation initiative.
We want Iowa to lead the way and are pleased to be able to partner with the CCPH group to coordinate the delivery of Walk with Ease at the community level in Iowa. The programming operates like the Worksite Model in which individuals are nested in a single 'group' to promote collaboration and shared commitment to a healthy lifestyle. The programming is a free, self-directed program that can be easily managed by a community health leader, county extension office or a committed community leader. While older individuals (60+) can enroll in the self-directed WWE program on their own, the community version is for adults 18 and up that want to establish health habits of physical activity. We have dubbed the program 'Spring into Summer' as a way to help kickoff the transition to more outdoor time and more opportunities for physical activity. How Does it Work?
We have developed this online version of the program to be easy to manage and promote in your community.
We handle all facets of programming through our online portal, see an example of the online portal below. The program includes weekly eNewsletters, video-based guides and self-monitoring tools to help individuals stay active. Programming works best when facilitated by a county 'Coach' that would promote enrollment, monitor registrations and support local walking efforts. However, the level of desired programming is up to you and can change over time.
We provide flyers and the information to post throughout your community as well as email content with links that would allow individuals to individually register. See our onboarding_flyer_for_wapello_county.pdf as an example. We can customize the email communication once we hear back from you on your interests. Once we finalize a plan with you, we will create a customized flyer with a QR code to enable easy registration by your employees. We also provide a sample email for employees to be able to register through a link.
